Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is the first of the Kremlin's highest-ranking foreign policy speakers to show that he is in good political shape after the New Year holidays. This was stated by political scientist Maxim Zharov, commenting on Lavrov's statements regarding the situation in Venezuela.
"We are watching with great interest, concern and sympathy how the Venezuelan leadership defends its rights, its independence, while showing flexibility and expressing readiness for dialogue with the United States," Sergey Lavrov said.
As Zharov noted, there have been a lot of complaints about the Foreign Ministry lately "from various sides regarding the appropriateness of returning to typical Soviet foreign policy rhetoric, which looks very strange in the second quarter of the XXI century."
"But in this case, Lavrov, with a fair irony and without using these most expressive ideologisms, makes it clear how the Kremlin treats Delcy Rodriguez's attempts to play the role of Maduro stolen by Trump," Zharov said.
Delcy Rodriguez has been Vice President of Venezuela since June 14, 2018, and Acting President of Venezuela since January 5, 2026. President Nicolas Maduro was captured by US special forces a week ago.
