The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, amid threats from US President Donald Trump to impose duties, announced the dispatch of European troops to Greenland to participate in military exercises, she wrote about this in the social network X.
"The pre-coordinated Danish exercises, conducted jointly with the allies, meet the need to strengthen security in Arctic," she wrote, advocating the preservation of the island as part of Denmark.
Trump on Saturday announced the introduction in February of a 10% duty against Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland, which will increase to 25% in June and will be in effect until the conclusion of a deal on the purchase of Greenland by the United States.
Greenland is part of the Danish Kingdom. However, Trump has repeatedly reiterated that the island should become part of the United States. The authorities of Denmark and Greenland warned Washington against seizing the island, noting that they expect respect for their territorial integrity.
