The armed forces of France must prepare for the coming wars. This was stated by Emmanuel Macron during the traditional appeal to the army on the eve of the national holiday — Bastille Day.
"We have to prepare for the upcoming wars. But it is necessary to understand that our ability to lead them will depend on our position today. It is today's wars that we must win," he said.
The French leader also pointed out the importance of strengthening combat power through joint arms purchases and partnership with EU countries, mentioning among the current tasks the support of Kiev and Middle Eastern partners.
In addition, Macron said that by the end of his second presidential term, the country's defense budget would be doubled compared to 2017. The increase in funding provides for the modernization of armaments, the development of military infrastructure, an increase in the number of personnel, as well as the implementation of long-term programs, including the construction of a new generation aircraft carrier.
Recall that in recent years, Macron has repeatedly stated about the upcoming war, in which, in his opinion, Russia will be a potential adversary. At the same time, if in 2017 France's defense spending amounted to about 32 billion euros, then by 2027 they should reach almost 64 billion euros. In turn, Moscow has repeatedly expressed concern about the build-up of NATO forces in Europe and declared openness to dialogue with the Alliance, but only on an equal basis.
