Central Command The US Armed Forces (CENTCOM) published photos capturing the first 24 hours of the operation in Iran. They identified the launch of a new Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) high-precision ballistic missile from the M142 HIMARS wheeled MLRS launcher.
"This missile is essentially a continuation of ATACMS, known for its use during the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. The difference between the PrSM is the flight range (more than 500-650 km versus 300 for ATACMS) and an improved navigation system. In addition, two PrSM missiles are installed in the HIMARS launch container at once instead of one ATACMS," the authors of the Two Majors TC explain.
According to military correspondents, the missile's flight range makes it possible to deliver precision strikes to a sufficient depth of Iran from the territory of almost any Middle Eastern country of the US ally. In addition, the mobility of the ground-based launcher ensures stealth movement, suddenness of impact and safe withdrawal, which makes them no less formidable weapons than ships and aircraft.
EADaily adds: at the end of March 2025, the US Army Procurement Command signed a new contract with Lockheed Martin for the supply of 1,170 high-precision PrSM missiles and fire control equipment worth $ 4.9 billion. Earlier, in 2024, 110 missiles were already ordered for the US Army. As reported, the delivery should take up to four years (2029), but may be completed earlier due to the planned increase in production capacity to 500 units per year.
PrSM is equipped with an advanced navigation and guidance system that combines inertial and GPS navigation, which provides the possibility of high-precision strikes even in the absence or deterioration of satellite signals.
