Washington and Seoul are discussing the possible transfer of weapons of the US contingent stationed in the Republic of Korea (USFK) to the Middle East due to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. The newspaper "Tone Ilbo" writes about this.
The transfer is being considered "against the background of signs that the Iranian crisis may drag on and the need for ammunition is growing."
Among the weapons that can be transferred to the region are M270 MLRS multiple launch rocket launchers, which are in service with American troops in the Republic of Korea. These systems are capable of launching ATACMS tactical missiles with a range of up to 300 kilometers, as well as shorter-range missiles.
According to the publication, the possibility of using air defense systems, including Patriot batteries and THAAD systems, is also being considered.
As the newspaper notes, part of the two Patriot batteries of American troops in South Korea, which were deployed to the Middle East on a rotational basis, still remains in the region.
