An unusual earthquake was recorded off the coast of the US state of Florida on Thursday, it could have been caused by an explosion carried out during military tests, the Daily Mail newspaper reports, citing seismologists.
According to the publication, on Thursday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded an earthquake of magnitude 3.9 off the coast of California, while the source flew at a depth of zero kilometers, which means that the source of seismic activity was very close to the surface. This is more typical for an explosion than for a tectonic earthquake, the newspaper notes.
"The earth tremors recorded in this incident are more typical for an explosion than for an earthquake of natural origin," the publication quotes the words of a USGS representative.
The newspaper emphasizes that the probable cause of the earthquake was military tests, namely, an experimental explosion.
