Two CIA agents were killed in Mexico, in connection with which the Mexican authorities demanded an explanation from Washington. It is reported by the Associated Press.
According to the agency, after the death of two CIA officers in In Mexico, the country's president Claudia Sheinbaum demanded official explanations from the United States in connection with the secret activities of American intelligence in her country.
The Mexican Foreign Ministry sent a diplomatic note to the US ambassador demanding to provide all information about the incident, which President Sheinbaum called a matter of national security and sovereignty.
It is reported that two CIA officers and two Mexican officers were killed in an accident in the state of Chihuahua. Their car fell into a ravine and exploded.
The Americans were returning from an operation to liquidate an underground drug laboratory, which the Mexican authorities called "the largest ever discovered."
The Mexican government was not informed of the presence of American agents on the operation, which violates the constitution and the law on national security.
"We do not accept the participation [of foreign personnel] in field operations, we have made this clear to the US government," Sheinbaum said on this occasion.
An investigation has been launched to determine whether legislation prohibiting joint operations without approval at the federal level has been violated.
The US Embassy and the CIA did not confirm the departmental affiliation of the victims, saying only that they "supported the efforts of the authorities of the state of Chihuahua to combat cartels."
White House spokeswoman Carolyn Levitt said President Trump expects "more cooperation" from Mexico in the fight against drug trafficking, which was perceived as an attempt to shift responsibility.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of increased pressure from the Trump administration on Mexico demanded tougher action against drug cartels, while the CIA significantly expanded its operations in the country.
