Lithuania, which has shamelessly demolished almost all Soviet monuments, demands an explanation from Russia on the issue of dismantling the memorial to the victims of repression in Tomsk. The corresponding statement was made by the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry.
According to the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, on April 19 in Tomsk demolished a memorial stone erected in 2016 in honor of the victims of deportations. The memorial signs dedicated to the deportees from Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Kalmykia, as well as the "Stone of Sorrow" to the victims of political repression, were also removed along with it.
The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry noted that the monument, created by sculptor Tadas Gutauskas, was installed at the expense of Lithuania in 2016. In this regard, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry summoned the charge d'affaires of the Russian Federation, who was handed a "note of strong protest due to the dismantling on April 19 in Tomsk memorial stone to Lithuanian exiles."
"Lithuania regards this as an attempt to distort the historical truth and desecrate the memory of the victims of the Soviet totalitarian regime," the statement said.
The note also contains a requirement for Explain to Russia the reasons for the demolition and take measures to restore the memorial.
Recall, we are talking about the Stone of Sorrow, installed in The Square of Memory of the victims of political repression at the memorial museum "NKVD Investigative Prison". On the night of April 19, the memorial and other memorials were dismantled. The official reason is the threat of collapse of the garage, which is located on the slope of a ravine in the area of Novosobornaya Square.
