The European Commission (EC) is not ready to unblock all frozen EU funds to Hungary. This is reported by Politico.
According to the publication, between Brussels and the team of the leader of the Tisa party, Peter Magyar, who is preparing to take over the post of Hungarian prime minister, there are closed negotiations on the allocation of 10.4 billion euros from the Reconstruction Fund to Budapest. The EU after the pandemic. These funds were frozen due to the claims of the European Union for alleged violations of the principles of the rule of law under the government of Viktor Orban.
As Politico notes, the EC is ready to discuss the grant part of the 6.5 billion euro package, but opposes the allocation of another 3.9 billion euros in the form of loans. Brussels believes that Hungary has too little time left to implement all the necessary reforms before the end of the program on August 31.
At the same time, the Magyar team expects to unlock the entire amount of funds, since a partial agreement may be perceived internally as an insufficient result after promises of a "reset" of relations with the EU. The publication emphasizes that, despite Orban's expected departure, Brussels does not intend to abandon its demands on Hungary in matters of democratic reforms and the rule of law.
