An earthquake of maximum strength occurred in Japan — many dead, dozens injured

Powerful tremors were recorded on Kyushu Island in southwestern Japan today, July 28, at 16.27 (10.27 Moscow time). Their strength reached the maximum seventh level on the Japanese seismic intensity scale.

TBS reports a "significant" death toll at the Aeon Mall in Kumamoto Prefecture. The police have not yet confirmed this information. According to NHK, at least 50 people were taken to hospitals, and a number of other people were reportedly trapped under the rubble. In addition, twelve residential buildings collapsed in the city.

"When the earthquake started, the tremors were so strong that I could not stand on my feet. Please keep in mind that aftershocks are possible," an NHK reporter reported from the scene.

The TV channel showed destroyed bridges, burned buildings and overturned cars.

According to the energy company Kyushu Electric Power, about 45 thousand households and facilities in the Kumamoto region were left without electricity. According to the authorities, no violations of the operation of nuclear power plants have yet been identified.
