The European Union plans to significantly expand the sanctions pressure on Russia this fall. This was stated by the head of diplomacy of the bloc, Kaya Kallas, in an interview with the German edition of Die Welt. According to Kallas, the new package of restrictions will be the largest since 2022, although Russia has already had to pay a "high price."
"If it is adopted, the number of Russian individuals, companies and organizations under sanctions will increase by a third at a time. The pressure needs to be increased," she said.
At the same time, Kallas did not disclose the nature of the planned restrictions.
She added that the adoption in the US Senate of the law on sanctions against Russia initiated by the late Senator Lindsey Graham ❶ "inspires hope for the rapprochement of Europe and The United States."
In the same interview, Kallas called for "better coordination of EU instruments in the interests of Europe," including at the level of diplomatic decisions.
The last, 21st package of sanctions The EU was approved on July 23. It includes 170 legal entities and 48 individuals. At the end of July, Bloomberg sources reported on the bloc's plans to impose restrictions on more than 1.6 thousand companies "associated with Russia."
In early August, Callas said that the EU had imposed new sanctions on five Russian citizens who, according to Brussels, "are involved in the Russian military-industrial complex."
