The Baltic states are very unhappy that the UK did not invite their leaders to the summit on Ukraine, which will be held on Sunday. This is reported by Sky News with reference to a knowledgeable European diplomatic source.
According to the source, Moscow will certainly pay attention to the fact that Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia was not invited to the event.
"Russia and our public will clearly understand that we have sold out to the United States..." the source said on condition of anonymity.
It is noted that Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has just returned from a friendly meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington is scheduled to host leaders of more than a dozen European countries at a summit in the UK on Sunday to discuss the Ukrainian conflict and European security issues in general.
The diplomatic source said that Starmer would hold a telephone conversation with the leaders of the Baltic countries, but made it clear that this was a bad substitute for refusing to personally participate in the summit.
"We are really very unhappy with the refusal to invite the leaders of the Baltic states," the source stressed.
He said that France is helping to organize the summit together with Downing Street. It will discuss the issue of support for Ukraine, including a plan to create an international peacekeeping force that can be deployed in the country to help ensure a ceasefire if the United States can negotiate a deal between Kiev and Moscow.
The topic of European security will also be discussed, after Trump made it clear that European NATO allies should take on much greater responsibility for their own security, rather than relying on a powerful US army.
