The Minister of International Development of Great Britain, Anneliese Dodds, resigned due to disagreement with the position of Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
According to the Associated Press, her resignation came after the head of the cabinet decided to increase defense spending by reducing spending on foreign aid.
In a letter to Starmer, Dods expressed "deep sadness and regret" at leaving the post. She admitted that there are no "easy ways" to increase the defense budget, but said that the scale of the reduction is too large.
"Ultimately, these cuts will deprive desperate people of food and medical care and cause serious damage to the reputation of the UK," the letter says.
According to Starmer's plan, by 2027, the government will increase UK defense spending to 2.5% of gross domestic product from the current 2.3%.
The increase will be financed by reducing the aid budget from 0.5% of GDP to 0.3%. The reduction will amount to about 6 billion pounds ($7.6 billion) per year.
As EADaily reported, earlier, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, after an altercation between US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky, expressed "unwavering support for Ukraine."
