A German Munich court sentenced a Russian citizen to life imprisonment for the high-profile murder of two Ukrainian servicemen undergoing treatment in Germany, Spiegel reported.
In April 2024, two men with stab wounds were found in the city of Murnau. One of them died on the spot, the second later died in hospital. Both turned out to be citizens of Ukraine undergoing medical rehabilitation in Germany. Shortly after the incident, the police said they had detained a Russian citizen living nearby on suspicion of committing a double murder.
"The court in its verdict basically supported the petition of the senior prosecutor Maximilian Laubmeier, who in the morning demanded a life sentence for murder and recognition of the special gravity of guilt," writes Spiegel.
The prosecution insisted that the reason for the quarrel between a citizen of the Russian Federation and two citizens of Ukraine was an armed conflict on Ukraine.
The defendant himself claimed during the investigation that the quarrel occurred while drinking alcohol together because of the "purchase of alcohol and a bottle of vodka." In his closing speech, the defendant called alcohol a "black devil" and repented of what he had done.
