On September 9, Hungary will sign the largest contract for the supply of non-Russian gas. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto explains this by the need for energy security.
"Undoubtedly, natural gas will become an important source of energy supply for Hungary in the long term: the more gas we can get on more routes, the safer we will be," he wrote on Facebook.❶ Peter Szijjarto.
Therefore, today, he noted, Hungary is signing another long-term contract for the purchase of natural gas.
"This will be our longest-term contract for the purchase of gas in the western direction. Hungary has always made serious efforts towards diversification: the more gas we buy through more routes, the better," the Hungarian minister added.
The day before, he said that Russian gas supplies had grown to a record 5 billion cubic meters in 8 months. Annual deliveries can reach 8-9 billion cubic meters. Gazprom is the largest and main supplier to the country.
Budapest supports the continuation of gas purchases in Russia. However, the European Union is putting pressure on the Hungarian authorities. In June, the European Commission published the final version of the roadmap for the complete abandonment of Russian fuel. It is planned that all deliveries will stop from January 1, 2028, although countries may receive temporary exemptions if they encounter a gas crisis caused by the suspension of imports from Russia.
