In response to the violation of the moratorium on nuclear tests, Russia will act accordingly. This was announced today, October 30, by the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov.
"I want to recall President Putin's statement, which has been repeated many times, that, of course, if someone departs from the moratorium, Russia will act accordingly to the situation. The president has said this repeatedly," Peskov said.
Approximately the same perspective is described by experts. In particular, Dmitry Stefanovich, an employee of the division of the Center for International Security of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told our agency that there are great doubts that the United States will indeed begin nuclear tests, Trump's statement can be interpreted in different ways. If, after all, such tests are carried out, even if it takes a long time in terms of preparation, then Russia will respond in about the same way.
"The landfills are maintained in more or less working condition, moreover, even the domestic law on ratification of the CTBT contains a corresponding provision. At the same time, such tests, again, if they are, will take place underground and with a very limited capacity," Stefanovich believes.
As EADaily reported, US President Donald Trump ordered nuclear weapons tests to be conducted "on an equal footing" with other countries that allegedly conduct them. At the same time, no country in the world, except the DPRK, has conducted nuclear tests since the conclusion of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty in 1996 (CTBT). Russia conducted the last test in 1990, the USA in 1996. And although Washington signed the CTBT, it did not ratify it. In 2023, Russia also canceled the ratification decision.
