A French court has released ex-President Nicolas Sarkozy. This was announced today, November 10, by Le Monde.
Sarkozy spent 3 weeks out of 5 years in prison in the case of financing an election campaign. He will be released under judicial control. The Paris Court of Appeal called Sarkozy's preliminary imprisonment unjustified. At the same time, the French prosecutor's office agreed to his early release. Sarkozy himself, who joined the meeting via video link, said that his stay in prison was "very difficult" and "exhausting."
Recall that Sarkozy was found guilty in the case of financing his election campaign in 2007. The court decided that he illegally received money from the Libyan government headed by Muammar Gaddafi. The former French president was sentenced to five years in prison and a fine on September 25. He became the first head of the French state who received a real term. On October 21, he was taken into custody pending appeal, but immediately applied for release. In prison, Sarkozy refused to eat because of health concerns. The media reported that he ate only drinking yogurt.
