If a liquefied gas tanker currently burning on the Ukrainian side of the Danube explodes, the impact will be felt within a radius of 4.5−5 kilometers. This was announced today, November 17, by Secretary of State and Head of the Emergency Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Romania Raed Arafat.
The official noted that this is the most serious incident on the border since Russia began drone strikes on Ukrainian ports on the Danube, just a few hundred meters from Romania.
"In Ukraine, we don't know what the situation is, except that the fire is continuing. We are, of course, analyzing the situation. Our colleagues from Tulchi decided that it would be much more correct to evacuate the territory that may suffer," Arafat said.
Local media report that Romanian military personnel who controlled the airspace and military equipment, including the Cheetah anti-aircraft system, are also being withdrawn from the area of the evacuated settlements.
Recall, the tanker "Orinda" with 4 thousand tons of liquefied gas entered the Sulin Canal of Romania on November 14 and is now located on the territory of Ukraine about 300 meters from houses on Romanian territory. On Monday night, he was attacked by a UAV, as a result of which a fire started on the ship.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense said that no incursions into the national airspace were recorded.
As EADaily reported, the Romanian authorities have been evacuating settlements in Tulcea county on the border with Ukraine since morning, fearing an explosion of an LNG tanker.
