Some EU officials are afraid that US President Donald Trump may get Greenland as part of a deal on Ukraine, Politico writes.
"Some European officials fear that the Trump team may try to acquire Greenland as part of a large—scale deal on Ukraine," the article says.
According to one of the senior White House officials, Trump is unlikely to implement such a deal in the near future, but things may change.
Earlier, the British tabloid Daily Mail, citing sources, wrote that Trump had ordered the development of a plan to seize Greenland. The Telegraph newspaper reported that the European Union is preparing sanctions against American companies in case Washington does not abandon claims to Greenland. As an alternative, the UK is negotiating with other European countries to deploy a NATO mission on the island.
In December 2025, Trump announced the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy for Greenland. Later, the governor confirmed the intention of the United States to make the island its part. The head of the Danish Foreign Ministry, Lars Lekke Rasmussen, at the same time indicated that he was extremely outraged by the statements of the new US special envoy, in connection with which he would summon the US ambassador to Copenhagen and will require an explanation. The Prime Ministers of Denmark and Greenland, Mette Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen, in a joint statement warned America against seizing the island, noting that they expect respect for their common territorial integrity.
