Protests in Houston: people demand the truth about the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo

Protests are taking place in Houston demanding a fair investigation into the death of Mexican migrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. This is reported by the Fox 26 Houston portal.

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Houston, demanding justice after the death of 52-year-old Mexican Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was shot by an ICE agent on July 7.

The situation with the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo has caused a wide public outcry in Houston, and the official version of ICE has been questioned.

Protests were held at the City Hall and in Ervan-Chyu Park, where family members, community activists, religious leaders and Congressman Al Green gathered.

A 52-year-old Mexican citizen was shot dead by an ICE agent on July 7 while driving his construction crew to the facility. He had lived in the USA for 35 years, he had no criminal record, and he was close to obtaining legal status.

The agency stated that Salgado Araujo ignored the commands to stop, rammed the ICE car, and the agent opened fire in self-defense.

This version is really not supported by witness testimony and raises questions.

The lawyer of the three men who were in the van stated that they told: the officer shot the driver through the passenger window, and no agent was in front of the van and was not in danger. They also claim that there was no collision with the ICE car.

The federal prosecutor provided new details that did not mention the collision with the car and did not directly say that the officer feared for his life. ICE agents were initially looking for two other men from Guatemala, and Salgado Araujo was not their target. Officials have not published any evidence supporting the version of self-defense.

At the protests, demands were made to disband the department. The organizers are also planning new actions, including at the evening meeting of the city council on July 28.

President Trump insists on continuing the practice of stopping cars, calling it an effective tool in the fight against crime.

At least seven people have been shot dead in federal immigration operations since January 2025 (according to Reuters). Other sources mention a figure of at least eight. At the same time, there is evidence of at least 21 shots fired by DHS agents since the beginning of Trump's second term, six of which were fatal.
