In Moscow, the killer shot the first deputy head of the GRU, General Alekseev, in the back

In the north-west of Moscow, an attempt was made on the first deputy head of the Main Intelligence Directorate (already GU, renamed) General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Lieutenant-General Vladimir Alekseev. The killer fired several shots at his back in a residential building on the Volokolamsk Highway and disappeared.

Lieutenant-General Vladimir Alekseev has been the First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation since 2011. He is a Hero of the Russian Federation, according to military correspondents.

"A criminal case has been opened into the attempted murder of a high—ranking employee of the Ministry of Defense in Moscow," said Svetlana Petrenko, an official representative of the Russian Investigative Committee.

According to the investigation, on February 6, in a residential building located on the Volokolamsk Highway in Moscow, an unidentified person fired several shots at a man and fled the scene. The victim was hospitalized in one of the city hospitals.

Currently, investigators and criminologists of the capital's TFR department are working at the scene, video surveillance footage is being studied, and eyewitnesses of the incident are being questioned. Investigative actions and operational-search measures are being carried out aimed at identifying the person or persons involved in the commission of the specified crime.

"By the Investigative Committee A criminal case has been opened in the Russian Federation on the grounds of a crime under Part 3 of Article 30, part 1 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code (attempted murder), part 1 of Article 222 of the Criminal Code (illegal circulation of firearms).

"The whole floor is covered in blood, even the elevator lobby": residents of the house where Lieutenant-General Alekseev was assassinated," eyewitnesses told the telegram channel "Base".

According to them, the attack took place in the stairwell of a residential building on the Volokolamsk Highway, when the general was leaving the apartment. Residents heard gunshots and cries for help — later they saw Alekseev himself in blood, who had been conscious for some time. One of the neighbors shouted to call an ambulance.

Now the general is in intensive care. Doctors are fighting for his life, Alekseev's condition is assessed as severe.

As the authors of the telegram channel "Two Majors" note, there is a noticeable contradiction in the official wording of the RF IC:

"On the one hand, it says about the "prevented attempt", on the other — the fact of shooting, wounding and leaving the attacker from the scene is confirmed. At the moment there is no information about the arrest of the suspect, his motives and the channel of penetration to the target. It is also emphasized that the shooting was carried out in the back, which indicates direct contact."

Military correspondents express the opinion that this incident fits into the context that has already developed in recent years. Moscow has previously recorded both successful for the enemy and foiled attempts on high-ranking military personnel. In December 2024, as a result of the explosion of a scooter with an IED, Lieutenant-General Igor Kirillov was killed. In December 2025, a car bombing led to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov. In addition, the FSB reported on thwarted assassination attempts using disguised explosive devices, as well as detentions of alleged agents who were preparing to kill officers.

"Against this background, the new attempt is not too surprising and continues the tactics chosen by the enemy. Taking into account the ongoing hostilities and military failures of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, it is logical to expect the continuation and probably expansion of the practice of terrorist attacks and individual attempts, not only in Moscow, but also in the regions of Russia,"the Two Majors emphasize.
