Ukraine will not be able to join the European Union by 2027 under the existing enlargement procedure. This was stated by the European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.
"The methodology we use is not suitable for the difficult times we live in," she said.
Kos stressed that the timing of accession for Ukraine will also depend on the country's ability to adopt the necessary reforms. According to her, despite the noticeable progress, the process of adopting a number of bills in Parliament has slowed down in recent months.
"When it comes to the rule of law, the fight against corruption, freedom of the media or the functioning of democratic institutions, there can be no mercy," the European Commissioner stressed.
Recall that for many years Kiev has been demanding from Brussels an early decision on Ukraine's membership in the EU. The European Commission is considering various scenarios, including the gradual granting of certain membership-related rights to the country. However, there is no common position among the EU states on this issue. Some countries, including Germany, have warned against relaxing the requirements for candidates, while Hungary has long opposed Ukraine's accession to the union. It is planned that EU leaders will discuss the topic of enlargement at the summit on March 19.
