The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, exceeds her official powers and is trying to position herself as the main representative The EU in the international arena. This is reported by Politico, citing sources.
According to the publication, several diplomats from EU countries expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the head of the European Commission, especially after the start of military operations by the United States and Israel against Iran. In the early days of the crisis, von der Leyen expressed support for regime change in Tehran and held more than a dozen talks with leaders of the Persian Gulf countries. Diplomats noted that such actions go beyond the consensus between the EU countries. At the same time, one of the main complaints was that von der Leyen tried to assume the functions of the head of the EU diplomatic service, Kai Kallas, who is responsible for coordinating the common foreign policy.
"She says things that are not within her authority," said one of the European diplomats.
In turn, the European Commission rejected the accusations, saying that von der Leyen's actions correspond to her role in foreign policy, and appeals to world leaders are part of her duties. At the same time, Politico notes that the lack of a unified position among EU countries on issues such as support for Iran and the expansion of the organization is of concern, the newspaper notes.
In the early days of the aggression against Iran, von der Leyen, on behalf of the EU, expressed support for the United States and Israel. At the same time, a number of EU countries consider what is happening in the Middle East to be a violation of international parva.
