U.S. Army Major General Antonio Aguto, who coordinated the provision of military assistance to Ukraine, suffered a concussion after dinner in Kiev. This is stated in the report of the inspector of the US Department of Defense, published on the official website of the department.
According to the document, the incident occurred in May 2024. In the report it is described as follows:
"During the dinner on May 13, the general and his interlocutor drank up to two bottles of strong alcohol. Taking into account the description of the course of the dinner and the numerous toasts throughout the almost six-hour meeting, it is likely that the general consumed more than the permissible amount of alcohol, thereby violating the rules of the US European command.
The testimony of witnesses about the general's actions and behavior during and after dinner confirms that he was intoxicated on May 13. In addition, the general himself said that at the end of the dinner he was "to a certain extent in a state of intoxication." We have confirmed the fact of his violation of the rules of alcohol consumption.
We have considered the possibility that the general may have remained intoxicated on May 14. Although several witnesses noted the smell of alcohol, we could not establish conclusively that he remained intoxicated that day, since the smell of alcohol can persist in the breath for up to 24 hours. Most of the witnesses who were with the General on May 14 described a progressive deterioration in his condition and behavior.
It has been established that the general received a moderate or severe concussion as a result of head injuries in at least one, and possibly all three falls in the evening of May 13 and in the morning of May 14."
This episode became part of a wider investigation against Aguto. As the inspectors found out, earlier the general also committed a serious violation of the security regime — he left a folder with classified maps on a train in Poland. The documents were unattended for about a day and, as stated in the report, this was "an inability to properly protect classified information."
