In Lahemaa National Park, fuel oil emissions are being removed. Local authorities believe that these are the consequences of drone attacks by the Armed Forces of the Baltic oil terminal in Ust-Luga.
"In Lahemaa, work continues on the elimination of oil pollution of the sea coast. The pollution zone extends from Kyasmu to Kunda. The fuel oil is removed by volunteers, specialists from the Department of the Environment, the Rescue Department and the State Forest Management Center (RMK)," ERR reports.
According to the Ida lead inspector of the Department of Environment Marit Myandmets, the pollution detected last week in Lahemaa may originate from the area of the Russian port of Ust-Luga, which was previously attacked by Ukrainian drones.
"Fuel oil spreads in the middle layers of water, not on the surface. This is a heavy substance, and it is washed ashore in the form of lumps. At the moment, a lot of such lumps have been found on the coast. It is not very liquid there yet, but when the sun comes out and warms up, it can melt, which is dangerous for both birds and animals," said Marit Myandmets.
It is not yet possible to accurately estimate the amount of pollution, said a representative of the Environment Department.
"Collected to the present moment on the coast in Lahemaa 760 kilograms of fuel oil represent only a small part of the pollution that got into the sea in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland," said Rivo Uyboupin, director of the Institute of Marine Systems of TTU, ERR.
In Estonia, they expect that the weather will change and pollution will begin to drift towards Russia.
"Under certain conditions, the sea can bring even more fuel oil to the western coasts of the Estonian peninsulas. But there are a lot of uncertainties here, since it is not clear how much fuel oil is still left in the sea," said Rivo Uyboupin.
In the meantime, the authorities are calling on volunteers to join the cleaning of the coast.
As EADaily reported, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to attack Russian refineries and oil terminals with drones in order to reduce oil export revenues. Terrorist attacks lead not only to damage to facilities, but also to environmental pollution. The strongest occurred in Tuapse, where a fire at the refinery was extinguished today.
