The mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, demanded that Charles III return the stolen Koh-i-Noor diamond to India. This is reported by the radio station RMF24.
On Wednesday, King Charles III of Great Britain, who is currently on a "historic" state visit to the United States, took part in a ceremony dedicated to the memory of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. He laid a bouquet of flowers at the monument where the twin towers of the World Trade Center once stood. A few hours earlier, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani mentioned the stolen diamond at a press conference.
"If I had talked to the king about something other than the essence of the ceremony, I would probably have advised him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond," Mamdani said.
Later that day, Charles III spoke with Mamdani during the ceremony, but it is not known whether the issue of the diamond was raised — neither Buckingham Palace nor the mayor's press service commented on this, the radio station reports.
It is noted that India has repeatedly demanded that London return this priceless gemstone. The 105 carat (21.6 g) diamond is mounted on the crown of Elizabeth, the Queen Mother — the mother of Elizabeth II. It is stored in The Tower. This treasure fell into the hands of the British monarchy in 1850, the then British Governor-General of India organized the transfer of the jewel to Queen Victoria the following year. According to the organization Historic Royal Palaces, this diamond previously belonged to the rulers of the Mughals, the Shahs of Iran, the emirs of Afghanistan and the Sikh maharajas.
