In October 2025, Gazprom and Kazakhstan signed a memorandum on the construction of a new gas pipeline, thanks to which supplies to the country can increase to 10 billion cubic meters per year. However, the country is worried that the Russian company may not be up to the pipeline now.
"Additional volumes should be used for gasification of the northern regions of Kazakhstan. Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Dauren Abayev optimistically promised Moscow in February 2026 that the new Ishim-Astana gas pipeline should be operational from May 1, 2030," the telegram channel "Oil and Gas of Kazakhstan" writes.
In his opinion, there are big doubts about the implementation of the project on time.
"According to industry sources, so far Gazprom and QazaqGaz have not agreed on the price and the specific volume of Russian gas that will go through the new pipe. The technical side of the project is still at the stage of preliminary development of the terms of reference between the structural divisions of the Kazakh national company for the purpose of subsequent development of the feasibility study," the telegram channel writes.
As noted by Oil and Gas of Kazakhstan, experts familiar with the negotiations say that outwardly everything looks like Gazprom is not up to this pipe at all.
As EADaily reported, the construction of a gas pipeline from Russia via Kazakhstan to China with parallel gasification of the north-eastern regions. However, the Chinese side has not shown interest in the project, as it will require the construction of long pipelines in China itself.
