The President of Hungary said that his successor will take office illegally

Hungarian President Tamas Shujok, who signed the amendment to According to the Constitution, which provides for his removal from office, he said that the next president would not be legitimate, since he would take the place of the one who was removed by violating constitutional values, and the entire institution of the presidency in Hungary would lose its main function.

"The legitimacy of the institution of the president, unchanged since the regime change, has also disappeared, since the next head of state will take office after the president, who was removed in violation of constitutional values," Shujok said in a video message posted on the social network.

According to Shujok, the institution of the presidency is becoming dependent on the executive branch, its state-legal role is weakening, and the main function will disappear, since it "ceases to play the role of any kind of restraining and balancing mechanism."

At the same time, Shujok admitted that despite the fact that the amendment was adopted "in violation of constitutional principles," he "does not have the authority" to oppose changes to the basic law adopted by parliament "as part of a formally legitimate procedure."

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar said that from July 20, Parliamentary Speaker Agnes Forsthoffer will serve as president until the election of a new president, which should take place within 30 days.
