US President Donald Trump is going to today's NATO summit in Ankara is in a bad mood, European leaders are afraid of possible conflicts with him. Also, because of Trump, the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, will not participate in the main meetings, CNN reports, citing sources.
According to the TV channel, Trump is going only because Ankara hinted that refusing to participate would be disrespectful to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan personally.
European leaders hope to end the meeting in Ankara without serious conflicts, planning to make new defense commitments in order to "reassure Trump." But in private conversations, they admit that they are not sure that everything will go smoothly, given Trump's constant criticism of them, in particular, for the lack of support for the war with Iran.
The summit will discuss, among other things, the Strait of Hormuz, although the Americans themselves doubt that Europe has the military capabilities to make a meaningful contribution to any efforts.
Another problematic topic is Greenland, which Trump has not abandoned the idea of capturing.
"At the moment, the only solution we have found to resolve this situation is the acquisition of Greenland by the United States, but we will continue to explore other options to take these considerations into account," said a senior US official.
Europe also wants to hear specifically how the withdrawal of American troops, which in recent months has been happening faster than many European officials expected, will take place. This "can inspire Russia."
Zelensky will take part in the leaders' dinner, but will not participate in the meetings — "this is a signal that Kiev's ambitions to join the alliance someday remain unfulfilled." At the same time, the publication assures that Trump is "impressed by Zelensky's ability to continue the fight against a much stronger opponent."
