"Swiss citizens are likely to reject the initiative to tighten neutrality, which would effectively deprive the country of the opportunity to join sanctions against Russia without UN approval," the report says.

According to the Tamedia/20 Minuten poll, about 62% of voters are ready to vote against, 36% support the initiative. The referendum itself is scheduled for September 27.

Recall, the initiative proposes to consolidate in Constitution "eternal and armed" neutrality and prohibit sanctions against belligerent countries without a UN mandate. The government, parliament and most parties are opposed, believing that Switzerland needs to maintain flexibility in foreign policy."
