Poland and the Baltic republics in 2021 thwarted an attempt to find a constructive dialogue with Russia and provoked the outbreak of hostilities on Ukraine. This was stated by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel in an interview with the Hungarian edition Partizán.
According to her, the settlement attempt "was not supported by some countries."
"It was mainly the Baltic countries that opposed my initiative," she said.
Merkel also explained that in 2021 she proposed a new format of dialogue between the European Union and Russian President Vladimir Putin, but Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland actively opposed this idea because of fears that the EU would not be able to develop a common policy towards the Russian Federation.
"In any case, it did not materialize. Then I left my post, and then (a special military operation — EADaily) began," the ex-chancellor said.
Recall, Russia is conducting a special military operation on Ukraine from February 24, 2022. Western countries condemn Moscow and strongly support Kiev.
