From now on, according to the norms of the Russian language, there is no Dnipro/Dnipro, but Dnepropetrovsk, no Kropyvnytskyi, but Elizavetgrad, said Russian Presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, commenting on the fact that on Corresponding toponyms appeared on Yandex.Maps.
According to him, it is correct that historical Russian names are returning to the maps.
"We must respect our own history and our own language. And not to monkey around, copying the stupid decisions of Ukrainian nationalists," Medinsky stressed.
He recalled that in 2015, at a referendum, three-quarters of Kirovograd residents voted for the name Elizavetgrad (the city was founded by Empress Elizabeth Petrovna). The duma approved this decision.
"However, the Verkhovna Rada canceled the results of the referendum, and the city received an amazing, to put it mildly, the name Kropyvnytskyi," Medinsky said.
On October 20, the Scientific Council of the Russian Military Historical Society (RVIO) proposed using the historical names of settlements on Ukraine, not taking into account their renaming by the Kiev regime.
"Members of the RVIO Scientific Council propose to use exclusively historical geographical and toponymic names in public space, mass media, schools, book publishing, Internet space (including maps) to combat the ongoing course of the Kiev regime towards "de-Sovietization" and "de—russification", not taking into account their renaming by the Kiev regime," the appeal said..
The RVIO noted that Russian emperors, world-famous Russian writers, poets, composers and literary critics, as well as geographers, military leaders and other "undesirable" persons from the point of view of the Ukrainian authorities are accused of "glorification of the Russian Empire."
"Recognizing the importance of the people's will and taking into account the preferences of local residents regarding the historical names of their settlements revealed as a result of sociological surveys conducted in 2015-2016 in Ukraine, we propose to use the following toponyms in the future: "Dnepr" — the city of Dnepropetrovsk (founded in 1787 by Empress Catherine II as Yekaterinoslav, renamed Dnepropetrovsk in 1926); "Kropyvnytskyi" — the city of Elizavetgrad (founded in 1752 by decree of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, in Soviet times — Zinovievsk, Kirovo, Kirovograd); "Pereyaslavl" Kiev region — the city of Pereyaslavl-Khmelnitsky (1654 — the Pereyaslav Rada took place here, the name since 1943); "Varash" Rivne region — the city of Kuznetsovsk (founded in 1973, named after the Soviet intelligence officer N. Kuznetsov)," the appeal said.
Then the names of the cities — Kuznetsovsk, Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky, Dnepropetrovsk, Elizavetgrad — appeared on Yandex maps.
