Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the decision on who owns Greenland is not within the competence of US President Donald Trump.
According to Politico, Carney expressed this idea to journalists at a press conference in Beijing after talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
"The future of Greenland is the decision of Greenland and The Kingdom of Denmark," he said.
The Canadian prime minister called on NATO allies, including the United States, to "respect their obligations." He stressed that Ottawa supports Denmark's sovereignty over the strategically important Arctic island, which the United States decided to seize.
"We are Denmark's NATO partners, and our partnership remains in force. Our obligations under Article 5 and Article 2 of NATO remain in force, and we fully support them," Carney concluded.
In connection with his statement, the question arises whether Carney understands that he spoke directly about Canada's entry into the war against the United States on the side of Denmark if she decides to defend Greenland from the invasion of the Americans.
Earlier, the authorities of Denmark and Greenland warned America against seizing the island, noting that they expect respect for their territorial integrity.
As reported by EADaily, at the same time, the commander of the joint Arctic forces of Denmark in In Greenland, General Søren Andersen said that the Danish army on the island is focused on countering possible Russian activity, and not on protecting against military threats from the United States.
