British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that US President Donald Trump could have misunderstood the transfer of a limited contingent of European troops to Greenland. This is reported by The Guardian newspaper.
According to Starmer, the mission was started not because of Trump's threats to get his hands on Greenland, but to repel Russia.
"This is one of the topics that I discussed with President Trump yesterday... those forces that were clearly there to assess and work on the risks from Russia," Starmer said at a press conference.
It is noted that this is how Starmer picked up the journalist's suggestion that Trump may have misunderstood the Europeans' desire to transfer the military to Greenland — as a move against him, and not as a way to show that they hear and want to discuss his arguments about the importance of ensuring the security of the Arctic.
"I believe that the Italian Giorgia Meloni ... was the first ... who put forward this narrative over the weekend as a kind of exit from the ramp for all participants, and it seems to be gaining momentum," notes the author of the note, Jakub Krupa.
Earlier, a number of NATO member countries, including the United Kingdom, sent their military personnel to Greenland to participate in the preparation of the Arctic Endurance exercises. Germany has already recalled its representatives.
