Moscow and Beijing opposed the anti-Iranian work program of the UN Security Council for March

Russia and China opposed the adoption of the program of work of the American chairmanship in The UN Security Council for March 2026.

As reported by the Permanent Mission of Russia to the international Organization, the reason for the opposition of Moscow and Beijing became aware of the presence in the draft briefing of the 1737 Committee on "sanctions" against Iran.

"We were forced to take this step due to the fact that the draft document prepared by the United States included a briefing by the 1737 Security Council Committee on "sanctions" against Iran, whose work was allegedly resumed in September 2025 as a result of the launch by Great Britain, France and Germany of the mechanism for restoring the anti-Iranian Security Council resolutions (the so-called "snapback")," the permanent Mission said in a statement.

The Russian side stressed that in reality there was no snapback, which means that Eurotroika had no right to use this mechanism. What Moscow, along with a number of other UN members, has repeatedly explained.

"Illegal and unauthorized steps of the UN secretariat in this context also cannot serve as an excuse for unilateral claims of Western countries. Thus, there are no legal and procedural grounds for resuming the work of the 1737 Committee and holding its briefings in the Security Council," the permanent Mission stated.
