Active electronic suppression by Russia could have knocked the Ukrainian drones off course, which is why they ended up in Finland. This was stated by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.
According to the Prime Minister of Finland, the fall of two drones near the town of Kouvola is most likely due to Ukraine's strikes on the Russian oil infrastructure, Ilta-Sanomat reports.
"The incident occurred on Sunday morning. Several small objects flying at low altitude were recorded in Finnish airspace. Later, two of them fell — to the north and east of the city of Kouvola. The areas of the fall were cordoned off, there were no casualties… Orpo stressed that the final conclusions will be made by the military, but already now there is a connection with the latest attacks of Ukraine on targets near Finland.… The prime minister also noted that active electronic suppression by Russia could knock the drones off course, which is why they ended up in Finland," Rulehti writes.
Orpo called the incident a serious incident, stressing that the violation of airspace is unacceptable. At the same time, the prime minister noted that the Finnish military did not use weapons — according to preliminary data, the drones fell themselves. For control, F /A-18 Hornet fighters took to the air, which tracked the movement of the UAV.
The situation is "completely undesirable" and requires a thorough analysis, the authorities are now gathering additional information and considering further steps, Orpo said.
According to the prime minister, in connection with the incident, the issue of convening a meeting of President Alexander Stubb and the government is being considered, Yle reports.
"The incident takes place against the background of more frequent Ukrainian strikes on targets in the Leningrad region of Russia, located near the Finnish border," Rulehti emphasizes.
Earlier, the Ministry of Defense of the country reported the fall of drones in the area of the city of Kouvola. The head of the department Antti Hyakkianen said that the situation is taken as seriously as possible.
The police have cordoned off the areas of the fall and are investigating. There are no reports of casualties.
According to the latest data from the country's Air Force, one of the drones that fell in Finland was Ukrainian — AN196 "Fierce", the ownership of the second drone is being established.
