The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has condemned the statement of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani on the Armenian Genocide, calling it "provocative and distorting facts." The press secretary of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Ayhan Hajizade wrote about this on the social network X.
"Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani… We reject your provocative statement. Such statements demonstrate a lack of understanding of the history and realities of the region, and also distort the facts in favor of political narratives.… Such irresponsible statements are unacceptable and should be immediately withdrawn," the text says.
Earlier, speaking on the occasion of the 111th anniversary of the events of 1915, Mamdani noted that the killing of one and a half million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire resonates with modern events. He blamed Azerbaijan and Turkey for the attacks on Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020, as well as for the "expulsion" of more than a hundred thousand people in 2023.
