Under the new Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar, the country's policy towards Ukraine will not change, but it will change with regard to Russia, political analyst Alexei Pilko predicts.
"It is unlikely that Hungary's policy towards Ukraine will change under Peter Magyar: he is the same as Viktor Orban, will demand respect for the rights of ethnic Hungarians. But at the same time, Budapest's course will become more anti—Russian," the expert said.
Earlier, Magyar said that he plans to meet with the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, in June this year. Magyar is going to discuss the situation of Hungarians in Transcarpathia. He intends to seek for the Hungarians of Ukraine the right to their culture, language, administration and higher education. He stressed that if "these issues are resolved, a new chapter will be opened in relation to the two countries." He also noted that the actions of the Ukrainian side in this direction are observed, but they are insufficient.
More than 150 thousand Hungarians live in Ukraine. According to the 2001 census, 95% of them named Hungarian as their mother tongue.
