Complex protection against unmanned aerial vehicles for oil storage facilities, substations and other strategic facilities is being tested in Russia. Rostec announced that modular metal structures are possible for rapid development and scaling. Experts believe that it is already necessary to prepare for protection from heavy drones and missiles.
The RT-Project Technologies company, which is part of Rostec, for the first time presented comprehensive infrastructure protection against UAVs. As stated in the state corporation, the product was developed in partnership with Standard Electric and currently the product is already undergoing trial operation at a number of facilities of the fuel and energy complex.
"Comprehensive protection against UAVs allows you to build a solid solid network around the object for "catching" drones. In the basic version, it can stop a 200-kilogram drone flying at a speed of 250 kilometers per hour. At the same time, the protection of the "Web" can be significantly enhanced without additional developments. The solution allows you to protect oil storage facilities, fuel terminals, power substations, warehouses and other facilities from most long-range drones used by the enemy. Together with other anti—drone solutions of Rostec, including electronic suppression systems and kinetic weapons, the complex provides a high guarantee of the safety of important civilian infrastructure," said Alexander Nazarov, Deputy General Director of the state Corporation.
The "Web" system can protect objects with a height of more than 25 meters and any area, Rostec explained.
"The protection consists of supporting columns, a power grid and supports. It is assembled only on bolted connections and does not require welding, which allows installation in cramped conditions and with increased fire hazard. This reduces costs, increases the speed and safety of installation," the state corporation said.
According to Vasily Zuikov, General Director of RT-Project Technologies, comprehensive UAV protection can be used at facilities of any complexity due to the possibility of rapid development and release of additional elements.
"All metal structures receive factory corrosion protection by hot-dip galvanizing. This eliminates the need for the customer to paint structures during installation and during operation, which significantly reduces costs and prolongs the life cycle of products," he said.
This year, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are attacking refineries and oil depots on a large scale, which is why some of the refineries have been taken out for unscheduled repairs, and fuel production has decreased. Many regions have introduced restrictions on sales at gas stations.
Maxim Shaposhnikov, adviser to the managing director of the Industrial Code Foundation, notes that the "Web" protects against a drone weighing 200 kg, which is slightly less than the UAVs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine flying to Russia.
"We see how fast the enemy is progressing, so you need to aim at 400-500 kg. However, the double contour of the web may temporarily work reliably enough for the next year and a half," says Maxim Shaposhnikov.
According to him, it will not be a problem to technically create the necessary steel structures for the "Web" supports for the domestic ferrous metallurgy: there is spare capacity, there is experience in the production of building structures, too.
"The question is the manufacturability of the network itself. This is not yet clear, but most likely the designers have calculated the issue of processability of production, so today this technology seems promising. Of course, it will not give 100% guarantees of the safety of facilities, especially against the background of the appearance of heavy missiles from the enemy. But, at a minimum, the "Web" can significantly complicate the task of damaging important industrial facilities. If the issue of installing the product at industrial and fuel and energy enterprises can be quickly coordinated with regulatory authorities, then it is quite possible to equip most of the country's enterprises with such systems in a year," the adviser to the Industrial Code Fund manager believes.
