A new heat wave and a solar eclipse are hitting Europe's green energy sector today and, for example, in Germany, wholesale electricity prices will rise to almost 500 euros per MWh.
A new heat wave in Europe has brought calm and a drop in the capacity of wind farms. According to the Institute of Solar Energy Systems. According to Fraunhofer, the share of wind farms in electricity production in Germany has fallen below 10%, whereas yesterday it was more than 23%.
This caused a sharp increase in wholesale electricity prices in the EU countries. So, according to the Nord Pool exchange, on August 12, the maximum prices are fixed in Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Poland. In the evening, prices will rise to 487 euros per MWh.
At the same time, average daily prices will rise to 147-161 euros per MWh.
Another unpleasant surprise was the solar eclipse, which takes place in Europe from 17.15 to 19.30 local time. This also affected prices, as operators, expecting a decrease in solar generation, began ordering additional capacities of coal and gas power plants to cover the decrease.
The national operator of Great Britain stated that additional capacities of 1.2 GW are needed only for Foggy Albion.
