The President of the UN General Assembly and former German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbok was accused of honoring the memory of a Hamas militant. This is reported by the European media.
It is reported that on June 8, Berbok took part in an event in memory of the fallen employees of the world organization. On August 14, the non-governmental organization UN Watch published footage from this event and criticized the fact that the name of the former teacher and director of the UNRWA school in the Gaza Strip, Imad El-Samhuri, was read out on it. According to UN Watch, he was a commander in the structure of the Palestinian radical Islamist movement Hamas.
As the Die Welt newspaper clarified on August 16, a total of 136 UN employees who died in 2025, including 80 UNRWA employees, were commemorated. The memorial ceremony was also attended by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who, together with Berbok, lit a candle in memory of the victims.
Later, UN Watch director Hillel Neuer called on Guterres and Berbok to apologize. In an open letter, he asked if they were going to apologize for lighting a memorial candle at a ceremony at the UN in honor of, according to him, a Hamas commander.
Recall, UN Watch refers to a Hamas video dedicated to El-Samhuri, as well as to publications on social networks, which, according to the organization, indicate his connections with Hamas functionaries and support for terrorism.
