Today, on August 26, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. The reason was the situation with the Russian bases in Khmeimim and Tartus.
"During the exchange of views on the situation around Syria, Vladimir Putin reaffirmed his principled position in support of the unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty of this country, the creation of conditions there for long-term normalization and post-conflict reconstruction. Both sides noted the importance of the Memorandum of Understanding signed on August 9 on the reorganization of the Khmeimim airbase and the Tartus logistics center," the Kremlin said in a release on its website.
The current state and prospects of further development of Russian-Syrian relations were also discussed. Readiness to deepen political dialogue, cooperation in trade, economic, humanitarian and other fields was expressed, and it was agreed to continue contacts at various levels.
As EADaily reported, according to a source from the American Bloomberg agency, following the results of the previously signed agreement with the new leadership of Syria, Russia will retain access to the Syrian port of Tartus and will continue to use the airfield in Khmeimim as a transit hub to service the Kremlin's operations in Africa.
