The American edition of The War Zone reacted to the appearance of a two-seat version of the fifth-generation Russian fighter, designated Su-57D. According to Western experts, the creation of such a modification is primarily aimed at exporting and controlling drones.
Journalists believe that the second crew member will greatly simplify interaction with unmanned wingmen, such as the heavy S-70 Hunter drone. India may become a potential buyer of such a machine. In addition, the Su-57D is able to replace the old Su-30SM used for air defense and ground strikes in the troops.
However, TWZ also pays attention to the downsides. Additional space will inevitably worsen flight performance. Due to the reduction in the volume of fuel tanks, the flight range will decrease, speed and maneuverability will suffer. The main problem is radar visibility: an elongated cabin will increase radar visibility, which is critical for a fifth-generation machine.
