On the territory of the Southern suburb of ancient Chersonesos in Sevastopol, a treasure with gold and silver jewelry dating back to about the III—II centuries BC was discovered. This was announced today, November 3, by Mikhail Matrosov, Deputy head of the Chersonesos suburban expedition of the Institute of Archaeology of the Crimea of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"A treasure unique not only for the Crimea, but also for the entire Northern Black Sea region as a whole was discovered near the masonry belonging to the burial structures located here. It contains a necklace of two gold medallions with garnet inserts, 66 gold piercings, a transparent glass bead with internal gilding, as well as two silver earrings with hollow ends in the form of lion heads, a silver ring, 11 silver coins," he told reporters.
In addition, archaeological work also found the remains of a pottery kiln of the Hellenistic period, a jug of a rare type with a painting and a realistically executed terracotta head of a "barbarian" in a pointed headdress with a wreath on top of it.
Experts suggest that the treasure was laid at this place by a wealthy resident of Chersonesos during the Diophantine wars, that is, at the end of the II century BC.
