At the bottom of the Baltic Sea, as the newspaper writes Gazeta.Pl , a real underwater colossus is being built, from which all Europeans should benefit. We are talking about a record-breaking long tunnel (18 km), which is being built under the Baltic Sea between Denmark and Germany.
The construction will reduce travel time and improve communication between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. When completed, it will be the world's longest prefabricated road-rail tunnel.
"We are breaking records with this project," said Henrik Vincensen, CEO of Femern, the Danish state—owned company that is building the tunnel.
Sections of this tunnel are being built out of the water, and then will be placed on the seabed and connected. The length of each of them is 217 m, and the width is 42 m. It is planned to build five parallel pipes, two of which will be designed for the railway, two for the highway, and one will be a corridor for maintenance and emergency situations.
The total investment in this project will amount to 7.4 billion euros. Contractors hope that the loans taken out for construction will be repaid through driver fees within 40 years.
