The European Parliament corrects the deal with the US: The White House is unlikely to like it

The European Parliament supported the conclusion of a trade deal with the United States, but plans to make adjustments that the White House is unlikely to like. Earlier, Washington has already threatened to leave the EU without LNG if it delays the approval of the deal.

"The laws, if agreed with the EU member states, will abolish most tariffs on manufactured goods from the United States and provide preferential access to the European market for a wide range of seafood and agricultural products from the United States in accordance with the commitments made in the summer of 2025 between The EU and the USA," the European Parliament reports.

In this situation, MEPs decided to tighten the proposed clause on cases of suspension of the trade agreement.

"For example, the European Commission could suspend all or part of trade preferences if the US imposes additional tariffs above the agreed 15% or new duties on EU goods. The suspension can also be activated if, for example, the United States discriminates against EU economic operators, threatens the territorial integrity of member states, their foreign and defense policies, or participates in economic coercion," the European Parliament said in a statement.

But that's not all. MEPs introduced a "starting point": The new tariffs will take effect only if the United States complies with its obligations. They include a reduction in US tariffs below 50%, up to a maximum of 15%, on products EU with steel and aluminum content. If this does not happen, then in six months such American products will lose preferences in the EU.

"The members also agreed on the validity period of the basic regulations — until March 31, 2028. It could be extended only through a new legislative proposal," the European Parliament added.

They will also instruct the European Commission to monitor the implementation of the deal and give the authority to suspend the trade agreement with the United States if imports from the other side of the Atlantic reach a level that could seriously damage the EU industry.

"MEPs will support the trade terms of the deal only if the regulation contains very strict and clear guarantees, and only after the United States fully complies with the terms of the deal," said deputy Bernd Lange.

According to the European Parliament, the deputies adopted both bills with amendments and are ready to start negotiations with EU governments on the final form of the package of laws.

Earlier, the United States was outraged that seven months have passed since the agreements on the trade deal with the United States, but the EU has not yet approved the agreement.

The US Ambassador to the EU, Andrew Puzder, told The Financial Times that the energy aspect of the trade agreement would be at risk, including LNG supplies, if the European Union tried to change any of the conditions.

"I do not know what will happen to the energy sector if they do not implement the agreement. We will return to the starting point. I think the United States will continue to do business with Europe, but the conditions may be less favorable. The situation will definitely not be so favorable. And... there are other buyers," the American diplomat threatened.
