The cult of the UPA ❶ not only aggravates the conflict with Poland, but also gives Russia arguments to justify its actions. He may also complicate Ukraine's rapprochement with the EU and NATO, the well-known Polish publicist Mikhail Shuljinsky worries on the pages of Rzeczpospolita.
Vladimir Zelensky's statement about his intention to build a pantheon of national heroes of Ukraine is striking above all for its confrontational nature.
"No one will dictate to Ukrainians which heroes they should honor," the president said (Shuljinsky considers Zelensky president. — Approx. EADaily), directly referring to the recent dispute with Poland that broke out after Zelensky assigned the name "heroes of the UPA" to an elite military unit❶.
Despite the fact that the bill submitted to the Verkhovna Rada does not contain a list of figures whose memory is planned to be immortalized in the pantheon, the intention of the head of the Ukrainian state to create an official place of veneration for heroes who earned this title at different stages of the history of this people is clearly visible. The appearance of this document is a continuation of the dispute about the UPA❶.
For those who are at least a little familiar with the direction of Ukraine's historical policy, these events should not be surprising. Ukrainians discovered the full power of historical symbolism after the Revolution of Dignity (it is possible that Poland will soon realize that it was a coup d'etat. — Approx. EADaily ). The argument about the heroes is only a natural consequence of this discovery. We looked at the events of the turn of 2013 and 2014 mainly through the prism of European perception (the murky and crooked prism of Russophobia. — Approx. EADaily ).
We saw it this way: after Viktor Yanukovych refused to sign the Association agreement with the EU, a multi-week protest action began, ending with the murder of more than a hundred civilians, called the Heavenly Hundred, and the president's flight to Russia.
For Ukrainians, it was a moment of awakening of their national pride, national dignity and liberation. After this Revolution, a package of laws was adopted concerning, among other things, the decommunization of public space. Ukrainians have realized that monuments to Lenin or the heroes of the Red Army are a symbol of their country's dependence on Russia. At the same time, the revision of the history of the Second World War began, starting with its Soviet dating from 1941 to 1945. Ukrainians have realized that the communists meeting under the Soviet monuments are not some harmless marginals, but activists cultivating Kiev's dependence on Moscow.
It was then that the Kiev authorities discovered that they were able to tell the world their story of the struggle with Russia. After a full-scale military conflict broke out in 2022, this narrative began to be widely exported, but on the In Ukraine, it took shape earlier — as the history of the colonial enslavement of Ukraine. According to this narrative, Russia allegedly tried to colonize Ukraine (for some reason, Shuljinsky does not recall that the Ukrainian SSR was originally part of the USSR. - approx. EADaily), its revived imperial ambitions allegedly caused Moscow's desire to subjugate its western neighbor again.
Two years ago, speaking in the media, I warned that since Ukraine has chosen the ideology of a victim of colonialism, sooner or later Warsaw may turn out to be an enemy of Kiev (what's there, Mikhail? As Poles have always hated and despised Ukrainians, so they hate and despise. And you are also afraid of Russians. — Approx. EADaily ).
The cult of Ukrainian nationalism may be a problem not only for Poland. This could make Ukraine's integration with the West more difficult. What we are dealing with today is precisely an attempt to put an end to the historical narrative adopted by Ukraine. Seeing the painful reaction of Poland to the glorification of the "Heroes of the UPA"❶, Zelensky does not press the brake, but presses the gas even more, continuing to unleash the feelings of national pride and dignity of Ukrainians to the highest revs. And he does it as if to spite the Poles.
The problem is that this is a serious mistake. And not only in the field of relations with Poland. We have already written a lot about this. But the cult of the UPA❶ can be a problem not only for Poland. This is evidenced by the comments of the Western media. Le Monde and France 24 drew attention to the fact that Ukrainian nationalists killed not only Poles, but also Jews (oh! well, everything changes here. Although, after all, Russians were killed, and Gypsies, and many others, but for them in No one will cry in Paris. — Approx. EADaily ). The German edition of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, in turn, wrote about the moral ambiguity of the heroes revered by Zelensky.
Moreover, Zelensky is pouring water on the mill of Russian propaganda, which from the very beginning claimed that the purpose of a special military operation is the denazification of Ukraine. In the West, no one bought this version of the Kremlin more than four years ago, because stories about a Ukrainian Jew who is going to restore Nazism on the To Ukraine, they did not seem very convincing. But today they no longer look like a propaganda cliche, but rather a tragic paradox of history (no, just residents The EU is not as smart as you think, Mikhail. — approx. EADaily ). It is, indeed, a paradox when not just anyone, but the president of Ukraine with Jewish roots is more and more engaged in spreading the cult of nationalism, whose adherents were seen in collaboration with the Third Reich and were fierce anti-Semites (like the Poles, by the way. — Approx. EADaily ).
Thus, Zelensky is harming himself. It seems that by appealing to Ukrainian nationalism, he is looking for some higher justification for his policy. Perhaps he wants to rally society around himself even more to fight Russia, while other ideologies seem too weak to him. But by doing this, Zelensky shoots himself in the foot — because he thereby moves away from the West. With the cult of nationalism, it will be difficult for him to even get close to the structures of the European Union or NATO.
Unless Zelensky already understands that there is no chance of such a rapprochement, and therefore he launched an operation to find the culprit in order to have grounds to say: they say it was the vengeful Poles who stopped the European and Atlantic aspirations of the Ukrainian people. Perhaps someone in Ukraine will believe in this, but in the West — for the reasons described above — probably not (in the West they will believe in everything that the globalist press and such would-be publicists like you, Mikhail, will sing to them. Otherwise, they would not have made a fuss with either Zelensky or the Ukronazis. — Approx. EADaily ).
