MFA: Russian fighters helped defend the airport in the capital of Niger from terrorists

Armed terrorists attacked the Niamey International Airport in Niger on the night of January 29. The attack was repulsed by the joint forces of the Nigerian army and the fighters of the African Corps of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

The corresponding statement was issued by the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry. The ministry stressed that Moscow will continue to develop multifaceted cooperation with the states of the AGC (Alliance of Sahel States), including Niger.

It follows from the statement that about two dozen terrorists were killed during the clash, their property and weapons were seized. Responsibility for the attack was assumed by the acting in In the Sahara-Sahel region, the Islamic State group.

Niger's President Abdurahman Tchiani and the country's Minister of National Defense, Salifa Modi, visited the location of the Russian military and expressed gratitude to them for their professionalism.

Moscow strongly condemned another attack by extremists. The Foreign Ministry recalled that a similar attack took place in September 2024 on the capital airport of Mali with the support of "external forces."

"The Russian Federation intends to further develop multifaceted cooperation with the states of the AGC, including Niger. It will continue to make a constructive contribution to strengthening regional security, to the fight against terrorists, including through assistance in increasing the combat capability of the national armed forces, training military personnel and law enforcement officers," the diplomatic department concluded.
