In Lithuanian Vevis, despite Moscow's protest, the burial of Soviet soldiers is being liquidated. This was announced by the mayor of the Electrenai municipality Gediminas Ratkevicius.
"The goal is to move the remains of the soldiers to a worthy place, since the current place is not suitable for this: city holidays, events, dances and songs are held there, which does not ensure proper respect for the servicemen," he said.
According to him, the remains will be moved to another place, which is located a few hundred meters from the current one, at the Vevis city cemetery.
"Permits and documentation have been issued. The council... has taken all the necessary decisions… We will start work almost in the near future," Ratkevicius said.
He also added that 111 military personnel were buried at the cemetery, but the exact number will be known after the start of exhumation work.
Let us remind you that on June 1, the Lithuanian charge d'affaires Yolanta Tubaite was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, who declared "a resolute protest in connection with the new barbaric plans of the Lithuanian authorities to eliminate the burial of Soviet soldiers and officers who died in the battles for the liberation of Lithuania from the Nazis in the city of Vevis." The Foreign Ministry stressed that after the Russian demarche related to Vilnius' actions regarding the burial in Siauliai, the malicious campaign to desecrate the remains of fallen soldiers in Lithuania continues to gain momentum. At the same time, the ministry noted that "once again, the representative of Lithuania was told that the destruction, damage or desecration of military graves, including those located abroad, is criminally punishable in Of the Russian Federation", and "all persons personally responsible for this are well known in Moscow."
