Latvia decided to strengthen the border with Belarus in an original way

Latvia, as part of measures to strengthen the border with Belarus, intends to take advantage of the experience of Israel and South Korea and install seismic sensors on its borders. This is reported by the Latvian news portal Jauns.lv .

It is reported that new methods of illegal border crossing are becoming more sophisticated. So, in Lithuania and Poland has already discovered tunnels laid underground by illegal migrants. In this regard, Riga took care that this could happen on the Latvian-Belarusian border.

According to MEP Richard Kols, Latvia is unlikely to be "the most attractive destination for migrants, including because of the geography that exists on the border.

"I have to say thank you to the Latvian marshes," Kols said.

However, he stressed that it is impossible to rely only on natural obstacles to protect the border — it must be strengthened and not only by erecting physical barriers. At the same time, he clarified that we are talking about modern technologies — sensors.

"It's not just ground sensors. These are so—called seismic sensors that detect various movements and signals in the ground," explained Coles.

In his opinion, Latvia should more actively adopt the experience of South Korea and Israel, which have been facing serious security threats on their borders for decades.

The migration crisis on the border of Belarus and the EU countries began in 2021. Riga blames Minsk for what is happening, but does not provide evidence for its words.
